Industrial gases specialist Messer is one of Germany’s leading innovators
Messer, largest family-run industrial gases specialist worldwide, is one of “Germany’s leading innovators”. This is the conclusion of a joint study carried out by economic institutes ‘Prognos’ and ‘IMWF Institut für Management- und Wirtschaftsforschung’ on behalf of ‘F.A.Z-Institut’. At the family-owned company Messer, sustainable and value-based action is the basis for innovation. “Technical expertise, innovation, flexibility and quick decision-making are the key elements of our approach,” owner Stefan Messer emphasizes, adding: “In state-of-the-art competence centres, our experts work together with customers to develop new application technologies for the use of gases.”
The aim of the study, carried out in six steps, was to provide a unique overview of Germany’s leading innovators. Its scope of investigation covered a total of 33,000 companies in Germany. The study was based on data from the European Patent Office (EPO) Worldwide Patent Statistical Database. Over 100 million patents from all the leading industrialized and developing countries, in other words all the economically significant nations on earth, are stored in this database.

In state-of-the-art competence centres, experts from Messer work together with customers to develop new application technologies for the use of gases. The competence centre’s Food section is a reflection of the wider food industry in that it has a particularly broad range of facilities and installations. This includes cryogenic chilling and freezing equipment, a packaging machine complete with gas mixer, a mixer with Messer patented Clapet nozzles and a pelletizer for producing frozen product pellets.
In the Chemistry and Environment segment Messer has an extensive portfolio of proven technologies which are constantly developed. The new competence centre in Krefeld, Germany, serves working out specific solutions for individual industrial applications and also offers rental equipment such as a compact injector, which is used to feed oxygen into clarifiers.
A specialised competence centre’s function covers the stage between research and development under laboratory conditions on the one hand and industrial application on the other. The whole cold grinding facility serves as a reference as it is designed along the lines of a production facility. The results obtained in the cold grinding facility can be applied to large-scale production.
The new competence centre of Messer in Krefeld serves as a hub for testing gas application technologies in the areas of Food, Industrial Cryogenic Applications, Cutting & Welding, and Chemistry & Environment. The main focus in the field of welding and cutting is on training, instruction and troubleshooting. Therefore welding equipment for all commonly used welding methods are available.
