Cylindrical components can be rapidly joined by shrink fitting. The inner component (e. g. shaft or bush) is shrunk. It is then inserted into the appropriately machined opening. A tight, press fit is produced when the temperatures of the components equalize.
This process can be quickly and forcefully converted with liquid nitrogen. The inner component is thereby shrunk by immersion into a liquid nitrogen bath.
Depending on the different coefficients of thermal expansion, shrinkage connections of different materials can often be released again by re-cooling or by introducing liquid nitrogen into a hollow shaft.
