More safety due to individual responsibility
Messer Safety Day 2017: Specialist for industrial gases about potential dangers and correct behaviour
On 8 September 2017, Messer, the largest privately-owned specialist for industrial gases, held its annual Safety Day at all of its locations around the world. The focus for this year’s event was on individual responsibility and heightened awareness of potential dangers.
In 2015, the European Industrial Gas Association (EIGA) developed 14 ‘Life-Saving Rules’. These basic, life-saving rules on how to behave have been successively disseminated at Messer, with the aim of creating a higher awareness for early identification of hazards and their sources. At this year’s action day, the company underscored a very basic rule: ‘Employees should take responsibility for their own actions, condition and decisions ... whenever the feel unsafe they should speak up.’ At the same time employees discussed about potential hazards for manufacturers of industrial gases in today’s society. “The growing threat of terror and civil unrest is omnipresent. That’s why we would like to heighten employees’ awareness of the potential dangers in this day and age, and to support them in taking individual responsibility”, says Stefan Messer, owner and CEO of the Messer Group.
In 2016, the specialist for industrial gases also developed the series of brochures ‘Safety Pocket Guide’, to steadily increase the safety of its customers. In addition to basic knowledge, such as an overview of danger symbols on the shoulders of cylinders, the guide also offers indispensable know-how for handling gases safely and without any risk.
With its annual Health and Safety Day, Messer has also been heightening employee awareness of topics in the field of environmental protection since 2013.
