European Road Safety Charter

The Messer Group has been a member of the action group for the European Road Safety Charter since June 2008. By signing the European Charter, we have committed ourselves to supporting the shared objective of the European Union action programme to halve the number of road deaths on European roads by 2010.

We have therefore signed the following commitment:

The signatory, Messer Group GmbH, represented by Dr. Hans-Gerd Wienands, CFO, is taking the initiative in implementing measures that go beyond the existing legal requirements as follows

  • By signing the European Road Safety Charter, we are committing ourselves to making our contribution to the shared goal of saving lives. Our company will therefore place even greater emphasis on the safe and secure transportation of industrial gases as well as the cautious behaviour of our employees and tanker drivers on the roads. The objectives of increasing safety awareness when dealing with hazards and enhancing knowledge of risks are just as important as looking at ways of improving safety measures. Our activities aimed at enhancing safety on Europe’s roads form part of our corporate philosophy.

This commitment of ours will be implemented by involving our employees and partners in it.

By the end of 2009 we will

  • draw up a new manual in the Messer Group for the safe transportation by road of industrial and medical gases in containers. The manual will contain instructions, standards and guidelines for the safe transportation of gases and will be distributed to the drivers of our Group.
  • concentrate on the introduction and distribution of better training material for driver training as well as driver safety brochures in all European languages. In order to meet the minimum requirement, every HGV driver will take part in a standard training course focussing on transferring cryogenic gases and on emergency procedures.
  • develop and introduce a new system for compiling statistics on road safety. This will be an effective way of motivating the management to improve transport safety. The statistics will focus on the causes of incidents as well as performance indicators (incidents/1 million kilometres), which we will use to measure the effectiveness of our road safety measures.
