Thermal spraying allows the
laying down of high quality surfaces onto conventional base metals like
steel. These coatings are used as a protection against corrosion, wear and
heat.
The coating material in form of wire, rod or powder is fed through a heat
source and so completely molten or surface-melted. The particles are sprayed
onto the surface with a high velocity of about 100 to 800 m/s. This results
in a strong bond between coating and base material. The main variations of
this process are:
- flame spraying,
- high velocity oxy fuel spraying,
- plasma spraying,
- arc spraying
The applications of these techniques de-pend on various criteria and
partially overlap.
-
protection against corrosion, wear and heat
- conservation of valuable base materials
- optimal combination of characteristics
- repair of high quality components
